LATE FR ODUDU, A SEED OF IMMORTALITY IN OUR HEARTS

The buried remains of the late Very Rev. Fr. Louis Odudu has been described “as a seed of immortality in our hearts, full of sadness, pain, yet at the same time joyful hope and profound gratitude to the Will of God.” This assertion was made by the bosom friend of the deceased, Rev. Fr. Dr. Abaka Oghenejode (jnr), in his homily at the funeral Mass held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Warri, Delta State.

The homilist described the deceased as an intelligent, vibrant, diligent, visionary, prayerful, sports man and noble pastor adding: “May his convincing personal testimony to the harmony of faith and reason continue to bear fruits for the conversion of minds and hearts and the progress of the Gospel for many years to come.”

Fr. Abaka, who went down memory lane on the life of the former Director of Pastoral Affairs Department of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) noted that the late Fr. Odudu was an exemplary and dedicated worker who impacted positively in all the places he has worked as a religious and pastoral leader and a very good formator who has served the Church to the best of his ability.

His words: “I remember with esteem and affection this figure of a pastor who loved the Church and made positive contributions to the best of his ability in projecting the priesthood and his deep concern for the welfare of his faithful. I recall with nostalgic feelings the implicit diligence with which Fr. Odudu discharges his pastoral duties.” He added:  “Fr. Odudu was a student in the school of suffering on the journey to the priesthood; as a result, he was a diligent, prudent, prayerful, courageous and committed priest of God.

Noting that the deceased was a great loss to the Church of Warri Diocese and the country in general, the homilist condoled the Bishop John Oke Afareha, priests, religious and lay faithful of the diocese, the family members and other friends of the deceased urging all to take consolation in the fact that: spiritual practices such as Reflections, sober inner recesses, the rosary and deep concentration will strengthen us and bring us a stable and emotional foundation for dealing with this time of transition.”

The funeral Mass was attended by Archbishop Augustine Akubeze, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Bishops Michael Odogwu Elue of Iselle Ukwu and Bishop Hyacinth Egbebo of Bomadi Diocese, as well as representatives of some members of the CBCN and dignitaries from all walks of life from different parts of the country. The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) delegation was led by the Secretary General, Rev. Fr. Ralph Madu.

During his more than ten years in the service of the Catholic Secretariat, the late Fr. Louis Igberaenu Odudu served as the Director of the Pastoral Affairs Department and rose to the position of the Deputy Secretary General. He was the pioneer Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Veritas Travels Agency and the National Catholic Service Centre, two agencies of the CBCN; based in Lagos.
